(April 7, 2016)—Albuquerque, New Mexico—I’m not even sure where to begin with El Modelo. For a year now I’ve been listening to my co-workers rave about this place, going on and on about the sopapillas, tamales and carne adovada. I thought to myself “come on folks, I’ve been to almost every amazing New Mexico restaurant in this city, and I’ve never even heard of this place.” (Now, before you all start wondering what planet I’ve been living on for the last 33 years, hear me out.) I went to El Modelo for the first time today, and I think I can say that I am now a complete person. There was a hole missing in my life, and it has now been filled (with cheese, beans and chile).
I found a table outside in the hot sun and my co-worker went inside to pick up our food. She came out, plopped my stuffed sopapilla down in front of me, and I took one bite and almost fell off my chair. Was it real? Could it be? Were these people being serious? It was absolutely. Totally. Completely. Delicious. AND it only cost $3.00. Was it possible that I’d officially found heaven on earth? I immediately started thinking about when I could get my next Modelo fix. I already know that I will quickly become their best customer. If I could eat there eight days a week, you better believe I would. It has become my mission in life to try every single item on the menu (but probably not in the same sitting). If you are a crazy person like me and have never been to El Modelo, I strongly recommend you stand up from wherever you are at the moment, walk to your vehicle, and drive straight to El Modelo. Prepare to have your mind blown. You are welcome.
