Monica’s El Portal: New Mexican Food in Old Town Albuquerque, New Mexico
Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA – When it comes to New Mexican food, I’m pretty picky, and I usually stay away from areas where there are too many tourists. The heat in the food is usually toned down for the visitors. This was actually my first time going to Monica’s El Portal, even though I had driven by it hundreds of times, if not thousands, over the years. I was skeptical at first, we must have been their first guests for the evening because there wasn’t anyone there.
My wife, my mother and I, and my son were very hungry, so we were anticipating the salsa. And with much satisfaction, the salsa was packed with flavor as well as the heat that is necessary to tickle my NM hot spot (whatever that’s supposed to mean, lol). Anyhow, it wasn’t very long before our food was out, which is great, because when I get hungry, I get a little grumpy, just like most people.
From the first bite, till I had finished, the food was super flavorful and both the red and green chile had a little kick as well as the chile flavor us New Mexican’s desire. I had the chile rellenos, which is usually a good gauge of how good the guy cooks in the back. They were very good. The breading was crispy, but not dry, and they were considerate to remove the seeds. They were fantastic! I’ll definitely be coming back to Monica’s El Portal again. Even the sopaipillas were cooked to perfection. They were a great finish to a great meal.
As for my wife and my mother, they also enjoyed their every bite of their food. Even the beans and rice were packed with flavor. And the good thing about it, is that the prices are very good, so don’t hesitate to bring the entire family. They have plenty of seating.
