(June 13, 2016)—Okay folks, it’s official – I have finally tasted the hottest green chile known to man. Well, to be honest, I’m sure there’s much hotter chile out there, but not that I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing. But let me start from the beginning – After taking a lovely drive up to Jemez on Sunday, my family and I decided to grab some authentic New Mexico food in the town of Bernalillo, NM. Abuelita’s, a restaurant none of us had dined at previously, sounded like the perfect choice. We drove through the residential streets of Bernalillo and quickly found ourselves at the entrance of Abuelita’s. As soon as we were seated, our server brought us a large bowl of fresh salsa, with homemade tortilla chips. Those were of course gone in about five seconds. The salsa was absolutely delicious – spicy, full of fresh vegetables, and substantial enough to curb our increasing hunger until our entrees arrived.
After gazing longingly down at the menu, I decided on the Navajo Taco with red chile. Our food arrived within about five minutes of ordering, which we were all thrilled about. The chile came on the side (maybe she thought we were tourists and was trying to be kind), but I dumped the entire thing all over my plate. The Navajo taco was topped with refried beans, mounds of melted cheese, and fresh lettuce and tomatoes. The red chile was full of flavor and was spicy enough for my experienced New Mexican palate. I was officially in heaven. I, of course, had to sample the green chile as well, and boy let me tell you, it was HOT! And so incredibly flavorful. If you want chile that will make your mouth explode in a dance of flavor, spice and excitement, it’s time to try Abuelita’s. Only a short drive from Albuquerque, Abuelita’s is a charming place, and the staff was upbeat and friendly. I can’t wait to go back to Abuelita’s to peruse the authentic menu further. I may even take the leap and order the green chile. I am a true New Mexican, after all!
See you there, folks.
